Type 4: Found Type Experimentation

Here are a few things I ran across on spring break. Some of them show trends that have been reoccurant in the typographic field, but most are things I found interesting.

Find and Share: Visual Language (Rhetoric Examples)

So here were 2 examples of design with rhetoric tropes present in them that I found interesting.

I enjoyed this one's use of pun. They relate the toothbrush's bristles to a tall field, and the dinosaur's neck is another pun of the toothbrush's long reach and arched shape.

The second example uses synecdoche and pun. The trash can itself acts as a visual pun for the eye's pupil. That one eye however, relies on synecdoche, since it represents the eyes of every possible smoker.

VisCom2, Type2, Image Making: Inspiration

So this is an awesome example of our current project I ran across on flicker. Found it through the book cover archive blog site.

Titled MAN AND SPACE

Graphics/Illustrations/progress/final photos of a redesign of 4 chapters from a classic educational book; Time Life Science Library's Man and Space. First printed in 1964.

This book project combines info graphics in a book format, and employs bodies of text not to different from our magazine layouts we are working with in Type 2.  I love the compositions, full bleed diagrams, and the playfulness with empty space. I hope that my compositions turn out just as great.
The use of line and the gradations that they used on them really adds a sense of depth to their otherwise flat, vector based art.

Image Making After-Crit

So here was my image after tiling it to be 24x36 inches in size.

 After crit was over with, I've been left with work to do on lighting composition.  I'll be printing the quote on actual 120 film in the final image so that the film markings will be there as well.  I think the projection would be more noticeable as a projection if it was bent around a corner or around the objects. So on the final shoot I'll have to see about projection over different surfaces.  And this gets me to my main change for the final image.  I've grown a bit board with my simple black drop cloth after seeing my peers with cabinets and other interesting scenes that they constructed. So I think, to continue with my theme of light, that I'll try shooting on mirrors and with mirrors as my backgrounds.  Should reflect the light and projections in interesting ways, and I'm sure it'll make for an interesting composition with the reflections of the objects.

Working with mirrors is apparently difficult in photography, but can yield interesting affects. I was thinking how much these ecletic collections of items look like those old "I Spy" pages from the books when I was a kid.  Very much set up photography, and one in particular really helped trick the mind.

This was an interesting perspective into just how mirrors can be used to replicate objects and open space.  Hopefully I use similar techniques in my final image.

VisCom2: Icon's Find and Share

I've been loving this project so far, and am very interested to see where these icons are applied.
I ran across these excellent car commercials using similar icon-like imagery. I'm hoping some experimental stuff like this is in store for us.
